Before and after the Viking Age (from the 9th to 11th century CE), the Norse relied on their warrior reputation as a marker of strength, discipline, duty and honor.
As an example, even 500 years after the end of Viking Age, in 1604, King Christian IV enacted the “Den norske Landslov”, an amendment to Norwegian laws based on previous bills, put into practice by Magnus VI Lagebøte. Among other things, this law required that all farmers should own weapons in amounts according to the size of their [land] properties.
By the end of the 1580s, King Christian IV was already importing swords from Germany at cost to his Norwegian subjects, and because of that, import was greatly expanded. The most popular weapon was the lethal Tessak (also known as "Dussack" in German).
