A etimologia permanece incerta. O termo deriva do nórdico antigo víkingar (no plural) ou vikingr (no singular). O artigo aponta três hipóteses principais para a palavra vik: pode se referir à região de Viken na Escandinávia; à palavra vikja (que significa evitar ou se esconder em uma enseada/baía); ou ainda estar ligada ao termo para "mercador". Curiosamente, os próprios nórdicos não se chamavam de "vikings" no dia a dia.
Eles falavam a língua nórdica antiga (norrœnt mál). Suas realizações eram gravadas em inscrições rúnicas, mas a maior parte de sua história e crenças era transmitida oralmente de geração em geração através das Sagas. Entre as principais fontes escritas posteriores (Séculos X a XIII) estão o Codex Regius (que contém a Edda Poética) e as obras de Snorri Sturluson, como o Heimskringla.
Traduzido do nórdico antigo, Forn Siðr significa "Antigo Costume". É o termo usado para definir a fé nórdica nativa e politeísta que remontava ao período pré-cristão. O artigo destaca que, culturalmente, o termo mais correto para os praticantes dessa religião é heiðin (aqueles que honram o costume), e não "pagãos".
Ao contrário de outras sociedades medievais da mesma época, o artigo ressalta que havia uma importante igualdade de gênero em vários aspectos da Era Viking. As mulheres nórdicas detinham direitos significativos para o período, com papéis ativos na administração das propriedades, na sociedade e até em contextos de liderança e defesa.
Os vikings eram navegadores brilhantes e utilizavam navios ágeis, como o famoso Knǫrr. Essas embarcações permitiam ataques surpresa rápidos e navegação tanto em mar aberto quanto em rios rasos. Graças a isso, eles expandiram seus horizontes e alcançaram as Ilhas Britânicas, Islândia, Groenlândia, França (Normandia), o Mar Báltico, a Rússia continental (onde eram chamados de varegues) e até regiões do Mar Cáspio, Irã e Arábia.
Bebiam em crânios? Não, isso é um mito; eles utilizavam chifres de animais tratados ou copos normais;
Altura e físico: embora a cultura pop os pinte como gigantes brutos e descomunais, a média física deles não destoava drasticamente de outros povos medievais da época;
O fim da Era Viking: ocorreu por volta do Século XI (entre os anos 793 e 1066). O declínio foi motivado pela progressiva centralização política na Escandinávia, o fortalecimento de reinos europeus rivais e, principalmente, pela cristianização generalizada dos povos nórdicos, que gradualmente abandonaram os hábitos de pilhagem e integraram-se ao modelo feudal europeu.
