O artigo aponta três hipóteses principais para a palavra vik: pode se referir à região de Viken na Escandinávia; à palavra vikja (que significa evitar ou se esconder em uma enseada/baía); ou ainda estar ligada ao termo para "mercador". Curiosamente, os próprios nórdicos não se chamavam de "vikings" no dia a dia.
